ROSIE:
Our next guest starred in the blockbuster hit, "Independence Day" has a critically acclaimed new series "Now and Again," which I enjoy, last and not least she is married to Bucky from "Ryan's Hope." Please welcome the delightful Margaret Colin!
[ cheers and applause ]
ROSIE:
... I'm sorry, you see, I forgot. Hi, Margaret, how are you?
MARGARET:
Very good.
ROSIE:
Good to see you.
MARGARET:
Thank you.
ROSIE:
I was thrown by that in the intro. Although Justin Dees, you know, Bucky. That's your hubby.
MARGARET:
I know him.
ROSIE:
You married him.
MARGARET:
I did, 12 years ago.
ROSIE:
He's on another soap, too.
MARGARET:
He's on "The Guiding Light" now. He's got a terrible, terrible scar on his hand. He had some cells removed from his hand. He's walking around like the sweetest wounded puppy. It's just like huge. And all they gave was Tylenol for it.
ROSIE:
He had cells removed?
MARGARET:
You know like precancerous things. And it's huge. And it's snowball time, that's really hard. Bucky's got a boo-boo.
ROSIE:
Did you know when he was Bucky? Did you watch "Ryan's Hope"?
MARGARET:
I did. But I didn't remember him.
ROSIE:
You didn't? I know all of them.
MARGARET:
I know you do?
ROSIE:
First and last names.
MARGARET:
I'm still catching- for not remembering him.
ROSIE:
Is he still friends with any of them?
MARGARET:
I think a couple of them.
ROSIE:
Pat? Malcolm?
MARGARET:
I'm on the spot.
ROSIE:
That's all right. I'll ask you at the commercial.
MARGARET:
Okay.
ROSIE:
How are you?
MARGARET:
Good.
ROSIE:
Your new show's doing great. I love it.
MARGARET:
Thank you.
ROSIE:
I'm waiting for him to tell you that it's John Goodman in the new body.
MARGARET:
Yeah.
ROSIE:
What's up with that?
MARGARET:
I don't think he's going to tell me.
ROSIE:
Ever?
MARGARET:
I don't think so. I think that he's just going to like stalk me and flirt with me. And if he tells me, then Doctor Theo Morris has to kill me.
ROSIE:
Yeah. Which is not good.
MARGARET:
No and that's bad for Heather, too.
ROSIE:
Yeah.
MARGARET:
I think he wants us alive and to yearn for each other.
ROSIE:
I loved when he called you on the phone and he hung up and the guy shows up. It's like big brother is really watching him.
MARGARET:
And the kiss was good. I did the kiss. But people think I'm Sela now. It was just Elizabeth Perkins before. Now it's like Sela Ward and Elizabeth Perkins, and I'm the other one.
ROSIE:
It's because of the "Again" titles. Didn't ABC and NBC have a conference, you've got a "Now and Again" and we've got a "Once and Again."
MARGARET:
That's right. And there's "Time and Again."
ROSIE:
Exactly there's too many "Agains."
MARGARET:
I think it's a contest to see who's going to last, again.
ROSIE:
I think you're both going to last. Cause they're good shows.
MARGARET:
They are good and they are different enough. There's no science fiction element in Sela's show. And there are no ex-models on our show. No! So --
ROSIE:
Although that guy's pretty modely, the guy who plays the skinny John Goodman.
MARGARET:
Eric?
ROSIE:
He's a cutie patootie, that guy.
MARGARET:
Yeah, he's a good actor. He's a sweetheart. And I love the premise of the show, because it is science fiction with real life. And my storyline battles insurance companies and getting money and obnoxious teenage children.
ROSIE:
Right.
MARGARET:
And, you know, he battles germs and super-heroes and boxing stuff, and yearns for me.
ROSIE:
Are you living here now? Or you're living out there? Because somehow I thought -
MARGARET:
We shoot it here.
ROSIE:
You shoot here?
MARGARET:
We shoot it in Queens.
ROSIE:
But Justin tapes in L.A.?
MARGARET:
No, Justin shoots here, too.
ROSIE:
Oh, you do.
MARGARET:
We've always been here. We've always been New Yorkers. We commuted.
ROSIE:
Right.
MARGARET:
To work to do movies and the occasional tv show, but we've always been from this coast.
ROSIE:
That's good.
MARGARET:
And the kids are here.
ROSIE:
How are your kids?
MARGARET:
They're big.
ROSIE:
They're like 10, right?
MARGARET:
Sam's 10 and Joe's 6.
ROSIE:
It's hard to believe they grow so quick.
MARGARET:
It does. Except when they don't sleep, then it goes really slowly.
ROSIE:
Yeah, yeah.
MARGARET:
And it's snow-time now, so they're having snow days.
ROSIE:
They're outside making forts.
MARGARET:
They are. It's like "Ma, too bad you missed it. It was really a bomb, Mom. Too bad you're not here."
ROSIE:
Is that good or bad?
MARGARET:
Is that good? It's very good.
ROSIE:
Did you know that Martha by mail, they have a snowball maker.
MARGARET:
No, I didn't.
ROSIE:
Can you imagine?
MARGARET:
That's so lazy.
ROSIE:
That is so lazy.
MARGARET:
Because you can't do this?
ROSIE:
You have to take the machine, and it's a little red thing that has two scoops and makes a perfect snowball.
MARGARET:
It's a recycled pooper scooper.
ROSIE:
It probably is. I ordered one because frankly, I have much, too much free time, with those catalogs.
MARGARET:
What about in those catalogs, those pants, they're like denim pants that have a sled built into the bottom. Have you seen those?
ROSIE:
I haven't seen those. What catalog has those?
MARGARET:
It's right by my exercise machine in the basement. I'll fax it to you.
ROSIE:
Okay, good.
MARGARET:
And you put it on. It comes in small, medium and large. I don't even want to know. And it fits on your butt. So you can put them on and slide right down the hill.
ROSIE:
That's a great idea. I'm surprised no one thought of that sooner.
MARGARET:
Maybe we should market it though, again and again.
ROSIE:
Again, again, and forever. That's funny. Now, how do you like doing the show? It's a lot of fun, I bet.
MARGARET:
It is fun.
ROSIE:
It's tiring, though.
MARGARET:
It is tiring. And it's a commute because I have to come from Jersey to Manhattan to Queens which is a lot more driving than I really ever care to do.
ROSIE:
Right.
MARGARET:
And I am enjoying it. I have a lot of fun. I just quit smoking.
ROSIE:
Congratulations.
[ applause ]
MARGARET:
Thank you.
ROSIE:
It's hard, right?
MARGARET:
It is hard. I think you guilted me into it.
ROSIE:
Well, I'm glad. Because it's not good.
MARGARET:
Especially when your doctor sits across the table from you and says, "you have a death wish."
ROSIE:
For women, too, smoking is not good.
MARGARET:
But it makes me grouchy, when you quit and you're grouchy and you're working a lot of hours, so you're grouchier. Although they maintain they don't see any difference at work. She's grouchy all the time.
ROSIE:
Do you find yourself snacking?
MARGARET:
Oh, my God.
ROSIE:
Because you don't look bigger.
MARGARET:
Thank you.
ROSIE:
Did you gain weight?
MARGARET:
Sure. I'm sitting in Courteney Cox's chair for God's sake.
ROSIE:
Everybody looks a little big next to her, Twiggy.
MARGARET:
Duh.
ROSIE:
You do like candy?
MARGARET:
I think the metabolism slowed down. And I'm sticking to it. The metabolism just slowed down. But it's good. It's much better. It's nice not to be addicted to that. That's the best news about it.
ROSIE:
Well, congratulations on stuff. We have a clip from "Now and Again," which is Friday nights. "Now and Again", not the other one.
MARGARET:
On CBS.
ROSIE:
Oh I thought it was NBC.
>> LISA: You could really be a contender. I would be happy to arrange a showing for your wife.
>> BEN: That would be great.
>> LISA: Good.
>> BEN: But I don't have a wife.
>> LISA: Oh. Well, if there's anyone whose opinion you might value, I would be happy to show it to them.
>> BEN: I don't think this is the one.
>> LISA: Oh. Well, it was say good start. And now that I have a better sense of what you're looking for -
>> BEN: What are you doing for dinner tomorrow night?
>> LISA: Dinner? I'm sorry. Did we skip something? Wasn't I paying attention somewhere?
[ applause ]
ROSIE:
Margaret Colin. And it's on CBS. I was wrong. Not NBC. I thought it was CBS. It's Friday nights and sadly, I'm always home.
MARGARET:
No, it's good.
ROSIE:
I never go out.
MARGARET:
Put the kids to bed and go out afterwards.
ROSIE:
Exactly. It's great to see you.
MARGARET:
Thank you.
ROSIE:
Say hi to Bucky.
MARGARET:
I will.
ROSIE:
And to your little kids.
MARGARET:
I will.
ROSIE:
I'm going send you a Martha Stewart snowball maker.
MARGARET:
And I'll fax you that catalog.
ROSIE:
Please do. Margaret Colin, not Collin. We'll be right back. She's not Seal Ward.
